The South Korean stock market experienced a robust performance on Monday, with semiconductor shares leading the charge. This positive trend helped to counterbalance concerns stemming from heightened tensions in the Middle East and rising oil prices, which have been affecting global markets.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged by 113.49 points, or 1.65%, closing at 7,007.72. This marks the third consecutive session of gains for the index, driven by investor enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors. Notably, Samsung Electronics saw a significant jump of 4.98%, reaching 274,000 won, while SK hynix experienced a modest increase of 0.59%, closing at 1.87 million won. SK Square, the parent company of SK hynix, also benefited, advancing 4.45%.
While semiconductor stocks provided a boost to the market, other sectors did not fare as well. Automotive giant Hyundai Motor faced a decline of 1.64%, and LG Energy Solution fell by 3.3%, contributing to a mixed performance across the broader market. These fluctuations reflect the varied investor sentiment as global economic and geopolitical uncertainties continue to influence market dynamics.
Additionally, the Korean won gained strength against the US dollar, closing at 1,381 won per dollar, an increase of 4.5 won from the prior session. This currency movement further underscores the complex interplay of factors impacting South Korea’s financial landscape.
