Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over the Trump administration’s decision to pause new sanctions against Russia, arguing that this could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin and potentially prolong the conflict in Ukraine. Zelenskyy criticized the suspension as a reward for Moscow, suggesting that it undermines efforts to bring the war to an end.
The proposed sanctions were set to impose further restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network, including imposing tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil, such as China and India. However, the Trump administration has delayed these measures for 60 days to evaluate their economic implications globally and for the United States.
Zelenskyy has called on the United States to reconsider its decision and urged European nations to engage diplomatically with Russia. His criticism comes amid increased Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with more than 15 major electricity generation and transmission facilities reportedly damaged, raising fears of power shortages as winter approaches.
As Russia’s assaults intensify, Zelenskyy highlighted the mounting pressure on Ukraine’s air defense systems, which are struggling to intercept missiles and drones. He also noted disruptions in military operations due to restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services, affecting Ukrainian forces’ drone activities.
The situation underscores the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv regarding sanctions, military aid, and strategies for conflict resolution. Zelenskyy insists that continued pressure on Russia is crucial for achieving lasting peace, cautioning that reducing sanctions while hostilities persist could extend the war.
