New Sanctions on Russia, Iran Spark Economic Concerns in US Business Sector

Date:

Amid ongoing global tensions, the United States has taken a decisive step to increase economic pressure on Russia and Iran through new legislative measures. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to address Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and to curb Iran’s controversial activities. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which now awaits approval from President Donald Trump.

The House voted 262-159 on September 16 to pass the bill, which follows earlier approval by the Senate in August. This comprehensive legislation targets Russian officials, financial institutions, and energy sectors, specifically focusing on entities involved in circumventing current sanctions through a so-called shadow fleet. Additionally, the act authorizes imposing tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that continue to purchase Russian oil or gas or assist in evading these sanctions.

Beyond targeting Russia, the bill also extends the Iran Sanctions Act through 2031. It includes new measures aimed at financial and energy activities associated with Iran, underscoring the U.S. government’s commitment to addressing perceived threats from Iranian activities in the Middle East and beyond.

While the bill received bipartisan support, it was not without opposition. Some lawmakers expressed concerns over provisions that expand presidential authority over tariffs and sanctions, fearing potential overreach. Despite these objections, the legislation marks a significant step in U.S. foreign policy, reflecting ongoing efforts to apply economic leverage as a tool for international diplomacy and conflict resolution.
