In a significant demonstration of its evolving diplomatic influence, Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing the collaborative relationship between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia. This comes in the wake of the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue between the two entities. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted Vietnam’s substantial contributions to the summit, which were instrumental in promoting ASEAN’s centrality and bolstering efforts to deepen the strategic partnership with Russia.
Heading the Vietnamese delegation, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng focused on the themes of dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Vietnam put forward proposals for expanding collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These initiatives align with the summit’s adoption of new frameworks aimed at reinforcing ASEAN–Russia cooperation through the year 2030, with energy identified as a key area of focus.
Furthering its commitment to future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This event is expected to foster a new generation of diplomatic engagement between the regions. During the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in bilateral discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with conversations centering on expanding cooperation across energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport sectors.
The outcomes of the summit have been viewed by Vietnam as a catalyst for strengthening ASEAN–Russia relations, thereby enhancing regional stability. The agreements and frameworks established are anticipated to create new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation across the broader Eurasian region. As ASEAN and Russia look to the future, Vietnam’s active role in these diplomatic endeavors underscores its growing importance on the regional stage, promoting a shared vision of prosperity and collaboration.
