Korean Basketball Secures Four Asian Games Medals Amid Domestic Growth Challenges

Date:

Korean basketball recently achieved notable success at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, capturing medals across all four categories in both men’s and women’s 5×5 and 3×3 competitions. This accomplishment comes as the sport faces ongoing challenges in maintaining its domestic popularity and developing talent.

The men’s 5×5 team ended a 12-year title drought by defeating Japan 67-57 in the finals, while the men’s 3×3 team earned Korea’s first gold in the discipline with a 19-10 victory over Qatar. The women’s 3×3 team celebrated a bronze medal after a decisive 21-8 win against Thailand, marking Korea’s inaugural Asian Games medal in this event. Additionally, the women’s 5×5 team reached the finals after a notable 85-80 triumph over China in the semifinals.

This series of victories is a significant boost for Korean basketball, which has been experiencing a decline in popularity. The Korean Basketball League saw 811,185 spectators during the 2025-26 regular season, the highest in nine years, yet still shy of the 1.2 million record set in 2013-14. The country continues to rely heavily on a limited pool of school and university players for its professional and national teams, with only 2,351 registered student-athletes compared to Japan’s more extensive basketball infrastructure.

Korea’s recent success was bolstered by increased international exposure and structured preparation, especially for the 3×3 teams. Players participated in both domestic and international competitions leading up to the Asian Games, contributing to their strong performance.

Despite these achievements, basketball officials and analysts emphasize the need for continued investment in player development, international competition, domestic leagues, and training infrastructure. The women’s teams, in particular, face challenges in maintaining sufficient numbers for full 5×5 training sessions.
