China’s Xi to Host South Korean President Lee Amid Japan Tensions

Date:

Chinese President Xi Jinping will host South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on a state visit starting Sunday, underscoring Beijing’s effort to strengthen ties with Seoul at a time of strained relations with Japan over Taiwan.
The visit will be the second meeting between the two leaders in just two months, signaling China’s strong interest in deepening diplomatic, economic and tourism cooperation with South Korea. Analysts say the timing is strategic, coming ahead of Lee’s anticipated visit to Japan and amid rising regional frictions.
The South Korean administration has expressed its intent to rebuild relations with China, acknowledging Beijing as its largest trading partner. Seoul is seeking to balance its alliances while avoiding being drawn into disputes involving China and Japan.
Talks are expected to focus on economic cooperation, supply chains, climate initiatives and advanced technologies. Regional security issues, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula and China’s role in encouraging dialogue with North Korea, are also likely to be discussed.
