President Lee Jae-myung Navigates Early Challenges, Prioritizes People Amidst Political Transition; Diplomatic Outreach to Trump Underway

Date:

Seoul, South Korea – In a swift and impactful start to his presidency, Lee Jae-myung convened his first Cabinet meeting on Thursday, urging ministers and agency heads – all appointees of his impeached predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol – to remain dedicated to public service. Emphasizing a “people first” approach, President Lee acknowledged the potentially “awkward” situation but stressed the shared responsibility to the citizenry. His inauguration, following a by-election due to Yoon’s removal from office, has meant an immediate immersion into governance without a traditional transition period.
President Lee acknowledged the time needed to fully align the administration but committed to minimizing public hardship during this period of adjustment. A significant early move saw President Lee drop the nominations for Constitutional Court justices made by former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo during his interim presidency. This decision directly addresses earlier criticism from the Democratic Party, which argued that an acting president lacked the authority to fill such crucial vacancies.
On the international front, President Lee’s spokesperson, Kang Yu-jung, confirmed that a phone call is being arranged between President Lee and U.S. President Donald Trump. While details remain under coordination, this initiative signals an immediate focus on maintaining strong diplomatic ties with a key ally. The U.S. Congressional Korea Caucus has already extended congratulations to President Lee, affirming their commitment to the “ironclad US-Korea alliance” and wishing his administration success in navigating challenges on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
Domestically, questions persist regarding President Lee’s ongoing criminal trials, given his newfound presidential immunity. The Supreme Court’s confirmation of a jail sentence for his former deputy, linked to an illegal transfer of funds to North Korea allegedly to facilitate Lee’s visit, intensifies this debate. While the Democratic Party asserts that Lee’s criminal cases should be suspended under Article 84 of the Constitution, which grants incumbent presidents immunity from criminal prosecution, the article’s ambiguity on ongoing trials leaves room for legal interpretation. Exit polls show a clear public preference for the trials to continue, reflecting a desire for transparency and accountability.
Despite these immediate challenges, President Lee has wasted no time in shaping his team. On his inauguration day, he nominated Kim Min-seok from the Democratic Party leadership as Prime Minister and appointed three-time Democratic Party lawmaker Kang Hoon-sik as his Chief of Staff. For his national security team, he tapped former Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok as Director of the National Intelligence Service and former Ambassador to Russia Wi Sung-lac as Director of the National Security Office. These nominations, subject to National Assembly confirmation hearings, signal President Lee’s intent to rapidly establish his administration’s direction after his decisive victory with 49.42 percent of the vote.
