China has expressed strong disapproval of a proposed United States sanctions bill aimed at penalizing major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas. The Chinese government has vowed to take any necessary actions to defend the legitimate rights and interests of its own corporations.
The proposed U.S. legislation aims to target the largest global buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, with China being a significant consumer. This move has sparked a response from Beijing, as Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, articulated China’s firm stance against unilateral sanctions that are not sanctioned by international law or endorsed by the United Nations Security Council.
Lin emphasized that employing double standards and resorting to coercive tactics would ultimately prove to be ineffective. He reiterated China’s opposition to what it views as illegal unilateral sanctions, suggesting that such measures would be counterproductive in the long run.
The issue arises amid ongoing tensions between the United States and China, as both countries navigate complex geopolitical dynamics. The proposed sanctions are part of broader efforts by the U.S. to exert pressure on Russia by targeting its energy sector, a significant component of its economy. However, China argues that these efforts undermine international norms and could disrupt global economic stability.
