Pashinyan Seeks Putin’s Help to Lift Trade Barriers on Armenian Goods

Date:

In a recent telephone conversation, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reached out to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking assistance in lifting trade barriers that Russia has imposed on Armenian exports. The Armenian government has stated that these restrictions are in conflict with the bilateral agreements and principles of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), to which both nations belong. Pashinyan has underscored Armenia’s readiness to engage in dialogue to resolve the matter and urged for measures to be taken to alleviate the situation.

The trade tensions arise at a time when relations between Armenia and Russia are becoming increasingly strained, partly due to Armenia’s growing connections with Western countries. Recently, Russia enforced a temporary ban on the importation of various Armenian goods, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and alcoholic drinks. This move has added pressure to an already tense relationship between the two allies.

Compounding the situation is the broader geopolitical context involving Armenia’s foreign policy trajectory. Russia has previously cautioned Armenia that its aspirations to join the European Union might have repercussions on its standing within the EAEU. Despite these diplomatic frictions, Russia still holds a significant role in Armenia’s economy, being the largest trade partner and a crucial energy provider for the nation.

The Armenian Prime Minister’s appeal to the Russian President highlights the delicate balance Armenia is trying to maintain between its traditional ally and its newfound Western partners. As the country navigates this complex diplomatic landscape, resolving the trade dispute with Russia remains a priority for Pashinyan’s administration, which aims to safeguard economic stability while exploring new international alliances.
