Korean Companies Command Large OLED Market, Samsung Display at the Forefront

Date:

In a significant shift within the global OLED panel market, Samsung Display is poised to surpass LG Display in revenue for mid-to-large OLED panels during the third quarter. This will mark the first time Samsung Display has claimed the top spot in this sector. Together, these two South Korean companies are expected to dominate approximately 95% of the market for OLED panels used in laptops and monitors, leaving Chinese competitors trailing behind.

Samsung Display’s recent advancements include the shipment of cutting-edge OLED laptop panels that boast enhanced brightness and durability. Prominent technology brands such as Lenovo, Asus, Dell, and MSI are among those set to integrate this technology into their products. In a move to boost production efficiency and cost-effectiveness, Samsung is also expanding its manufacturing capabilities with the introduction of a new 8.6-generation production line.

Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers are striving to narrow the gap in OLED technology by making substantial investments. However, they continue to encounter difficulties in achieving high production yields. Despite noticeable improvements in their OLED technology, Chinese companies still lag behind their Korean counterparts in several key areas, including quality, customer trust, and the ability to produce large panels efficiently.

Industry experts point out that while the technological advancements of Chinese display makers are commendable, the established reputation and expertise of South Korean manufacturers give them a significant edge. Samsung and LG’s longstanding presence in the market has cultivated a level of trust and reliability among consumers that Chinese firms have yet to match. This trust is crucial, especially in the competitive landscape of large-panel production where precision and quality are paramount.

As the competition intensifies, the OLED panel market remains a critical battleground for display manufacturers. The coming months will reveal whether Samsung Display can maintain its newfound lead and how the dynamics between Korean and Chinese producers will continue to evolve. For now, Samsung’s strategic innovations and production expansions position it favorably in this rapidly growing industry.
