Balanced Diet Boosts Food Industry Growth Beyond Salad Sales

Date:

For many, salads have become synonymous with healthy eating and weight loss. Packed with fibre, vitamins, and minerals, they are undoubtedly nutritious. However, relying solely on salads for meals might not suffice, as they can fall short in providing essential nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates necessary for energy and overall body health. While a meal made entirely of raw vegetables such as cucumber, tomato, and lettuce is low in calories, it may lack these crucial elements that support muscle health and sustained energy levels.

Traditional Indian cuisine offers a more complete nutritional profile. Meals that include dal, roti or rice, vegetables, curd, and a small portion of salad present a balanced mix of protein, fibre, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and beneficial bacteria. This variety ensures a more comprehensive nutritional intake compared to consuming salads alone. Moreover, while raw vegetables are healthy, they are not universally suitable. Individuals with digestive issues, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or certain thyroid conditions may find lightly cooked vegetables easier on their systems. Cooking can also enhance the body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients.

Incorporating seasonal eating habits into one’s diet is another cornerstone of good nutrition. During the hot summer months, foods like cucumber, watermelon, curd, and coconut water are excellent for maintaining hydration. Conversely, in colder seasons, warm foods such as lentils, soups, millets, and cooked vegetables offer comfort and essential nutritional support. To boost the nutritional value of salads, they can be complemented with protein-rich foods like paneer, sprouts, eggs, tofu, beans, or grilled chicken, as well as whole grains like roti, brown rice, or millets.

Simple yet nutritious traditional dishes remain a staple of balanced eating. Recipes such as vegetable khichdi, dal with rice, millet rotis accompanied by vegetables, vegetable upma, and curd served with roasted vegetables are not only wholesome but also align well with maintaining a balanced diet. Emphasizing a balanced plate that includes vegetables, protein, healthy carbohydrates, good fats, and seasonal ingredients is a more sustainable approach to supporting long-term health, rather than chasing every new food trend that emerges.
