OpenAI Discontinues Voice Chat for Mac ChatGPT Users

Date:

A popular feature is being removed from ChatGPT’s Mac application. Starting January 15, 2026, users will no longer have access to voice conversations through the macOS desktop app. OpenAI described this decision as necessary for focusing on more unified voice experiences across its ecosystem.
Mac users seeking voice functionality have alternatives. The feature remains operational through the web version of ChatGPT, accessible via any internet browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android platforms. Windows desktop users also retain their voice capabilities, making Mac the only desktop platform losing this feature.
OpenAI’s announcement doesn’t include extensive technical explanations. The emphasis on unified experiences implies that the Mac app’s current voice architecture may not align with future development directions. Voice interaction represents a growing priority as AI companies explore new products and deeper system integrations.
Users who have integrated voice commands into their Mac usage patterns face a transition. Those utilizing voice for accessibility accommodations, individuals who multitask with hands-free conversation, or users who prefer speaking over typing will all need new solutions. Web-based or mobile alternatives exist but may not provide identical experiences.
Industry experts largely believe this is temporary. Given OpenAI’s substantial commitment to voice technology across its offerings, permanently excluding Mac users seems unlikely. The company is probably restructuring its voice infrastructure, with plans to eventually deliver enhanced capabilities to the Mac platform.
