Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul recently held their first meeting since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The talks took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, focusing on bilateral relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The discussion underscored the persistent tensions between Russia and Germany, with German officials reiterating Berlin’s firm stance on the Ukraine conflict. Both sides addressed various issues impacting their bilateral relations, which have been strained by recent allegations. Germany has accused Russia of attempting to target two cargo planes at Leipzig airport in August using an explosives-laden drone, further complicating their diplomatic ties.
During the meeting, Wadephul emphasized Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine and advocated for a ceasefire and negotiations aimed at establishing lasting peace in the region. This position aligns with Germany’s consistent approach to the conflict, seeking diplomatic solutions to ensure stability and security in Ukraine.
Lavrov’s meeting with Wadephul comes after his last engagement with a German foreign minister in January 2022, when he met with then-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock shortly before the escalation of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The recent talks signify a cautious attempt to maintain dialogue amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
