Lee Advocates Police Reform Amid Growing Economic Implications of Expanded Powers

Date:

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged for sweeping reforms within the police force, expressing concerns that the police might soon rise to become the most influential government body due to significant alterations in the country’s criminal justice system. During a Cabinet meeting, President Lee emphasized the urgent need for a specialized agency to oversee these reforms and ensure accountability within the police. He directed the prime minister’s office to solicit public opinions and devise a strategic plan for the establishment of this supervisory body.

The president’s appeal follows recent parliamentary approval of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act, which will strip the prosecution of its investigative powers. This legislative change will grant the police exclusive authority over criminal investigations once it comes into effect. President Lee highlighted that while the police’s powers are set to expand, it is crucial that measures are implemented to enhance their responsibility and prevent potential abuses of power.

Concerns about police accountability have been further amplified by a recent case involving the death of a woman who was reported missing on Jeju Island. The incident has sparked public scrutiny and raised questions regarding the police’s handling of public safety matters. President Lee referenced this case as an illustration of the need for reform, indicating that the current system has notable gaps in ensuring public safety and accountability.

President Lee articulated that with greater power comes the necessity for heightened responsibility, warning against the dangers of concentrated authority. He called for systemic changes aimed at bolstering police accountability and addressing any failures that compromise public safety. This call to action signifies his administration’s commitment to refining the balance of power within South Korea’s criminal justice framework and ensuring that law enforcement agencies operate with transparency and integrity.
