South Korean President Lee Jaemyung expressed his commitment to strengthening cooperation with China, emphasizing shared goals of prosperity, stability, and mutual growth. In a written interview ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to South Korea, Lee said he aims to build a stronger institutional foundation for bilateral economic and trade relations.
Xi’s visit, which coincides with the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, marks the first meeting between the two leaders since Lee’s government took office. Lee highlighted the significance of the visit, noting that both leaders share similar political paths that prioritize improving citizens’ livelihoods.
Lee outlined plans to expand collaboration in trade, investment, and supply chain stability while accelerating negotiations on the South Korea–China Free Trade Agreement to include services and investment. He also called for closer cooperation in culture, environment, and technology to enhance quality of life and regional prosperity.
On regional security, Lee reaffirmed his commitment to working with China to promote peace and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. He emphasized that maintaining stability aligns with the shared interests of both nations and that China’s constructive role is vital in achieving lasting peace.
During the APEC summit, Lee said South Korea remains dedicated to fostering multilateral cooperation on emerging challenges such as artificial intelligence innovation and demographic change, while supporting China’s efforts to lead next year’s APEC agenda.
