Three Seeds a Gut Specialist Swears By for Better Digestion

Date:

If you’ve been struggling with bloating, irregular bowel movements, or sluggish digestion, the solution might be simpler than you think. Seeds — specifically three particular varieties — have been highlighted by a digestive health expert as among the most effective natural tools for improving and cleansing the gut.
The three seeds are chia seeds, flaxseeds, and basil seeds. Each one has a distinct nutritional profile and works in its own way to support the complex ecosystem of your digestive tract. What they share is a high soluble fibre content and a track record of improving gut function in research and clinical practice.
Chia seeds are arguably the most versatile. Their soluble fibre forms a gel when wet, which travels through the gut and nourishes good bacteria, slows glucose absorption, and keeps bowel movements regular. The recommended approach is to soak one to two tablespoons in almond milk or yoghurt — ideally overnight — and top them with berries for a complete, gut-friendly meal.
Flaxseeds are next, and they’re particularly impressive for their anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. ALA, the primary fatty acid in flaxseeds, helps calm gut inflammation and supports the overall health of the digestive lining. Because whole seeds are largely indigestible, grinding them is non-negotiable. A tablespoon of ground flaxseeds in oatmeal or a smoothie several times a week is the recommended approach.
Basil seeds, called sabja seeds in traditional Ayurvedic practice, expand quickly in liquid and carry significant soluble fibre content. They’ve been used for centuries as a natural digestive remedy, and modern nutritional science supports their effectiveness. Combining them with chia seeds in a morning meal is a simple way to get double the benefit.
