The ‘Stork Stance’ Test: A 10-Second Key to a Longer Life

Date:

A renowned cardiologist is highlighting a simple exercise, sometimes called the “stork stance,” as a crucial test for predicting one’s longevity. This test—balancing on one leg for 10 seconds—is more than a measure of poise; it’s a window into your body’s overall health and a powerful indicator of your future well-being.
The scientific underpinning for this comes from a decade-long study published in 2022. The research tracked 1,700 adults in the 50-75 age range, comparing their initial balance ability with their health outcomes over the following years. The connection it uncovered between balance and survival was remarkably strong.
According to the study, those who could hold the one-legged stance for the 10-second minimum had an impressive 90%-plus probability of living for another seven years without major disability or a fatal cardiovascular event. This positions the simple stance as a vital, non-invasive screening tool.
The cardiologist explains that our ability to balance is a “multidimensional” marker of health. A struggle to remain steady can be attributed to a wide array of factors, including orthopedic issues, neurological conditions, declining vision, or even cognitive impairment. It’s a holistic indicator of how well your body’s systems are integrated.
So, how can you improve your score and your health outlook? If the test proves difficult, the expert advises a shift in fitness focus. Moving beyond just cardio, she recommends incorporating practices like Tai Chi and yoga, which are specifically designed to enhance balance, coordination, and the mind-body connection essential for a long and healthy life.
