A Global Trade Shake-Up: Trump’s Tariff Plan Targets Putin via India and China

Date:

President Donald Trump is proposing a major global trade shake-up, asking the European Union to join a campaign of 100% tariffs against India and China. This is not a direct trade dispute, but a strategic move designed to indirectly cripple Russia’s war effort in Ukraine by targeting the economies of its main supporters. The plan was formally presented to EU officials during recent talks in Washington.
The initiative is a response to the current deadlock in peace negotiations and Russia’s continued military aggression. A US official confirmed the administration’s readiness to implement the tariffs but emphasized that European participation is a prerequisite. “We are only going to do this if our European partners step up with us,” the official stated, highlighting the call for a united front.
This economic pressure is being applied as Russian President Vladimir Putin actively strengthens his ties with both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The US has already demonstrated its willingness to use such tactics, having recently imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports due to its trade with Russia. Trump’s new proposal seeks to magnify this pressure exponentially with the EU’s involvement.
However, the foundation of Trump’s tariff-based foreign policy is currently unstable. A crucial Supreme Court hearing in November will determine if the president has the legal authority to impose these duties. While the White House is publicly optimistic, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that an unfavorable ruling would force the US to issue massive refunds, creating a significant financial and political setback.
